Hands-Free Workbench Waste Collector

I’m constantly faced with the challenge of managing the inevitable mess that comes with my work. From removing supports and infill to building jigs, the core of creating is often a waste intensive affair. In search of a solution to this problem, I decided to create a custom trash bin that would seamlessly integrate with my workbench setup.

The goals for this project were to minimize the footprint on my workstation while maximizing the capacity to corral the waste and debris generated during construction. The solution I devised was a trash bin that hugs the edge of my workbench, with arms extending onto the desk itself to help funnel any errant materials into the container.

As I explored different design approaches, I found that the more angular and chamfered second version, printed without the need for support structures, actually didn’t quite align with my personal preferences. When it came to the hands-on experience, I actually gravitated more towards the curved version, which had a more organic and visually appealing aesthetic.

This project has been an iterative process, and I foresee one more version in the works. By constantly refining the design and addressing the practical challenges of my workspace, I’m confident that I’ll land on a final solution that not only helps me tame the chaos of my maker activities but also seamlessly integrates into the overall flow and aesthetic of my workbench setup.

The beauty of this project lies in its simplicity and functionality. By leveraging a few key design principles and a thorough understanding of my own needs, I was able to create a custom tool that enhances my productivity and keeps my workstation clean and organized.
