A Compact Storage Solution for a Heavy Hexbar

For this “1 Day Design Challenge,” I set out to find a smart way to store my heavy, 25-kilogram hexbar used for weightlifting.

The bars bulky size and substantial mass made it a potential safety hazard if it were to topple over, and leaving it on the floor was not a viable option as it would consume too much valuable floor space. I knew I needed to come up with a robust, wall-mounted solution to keep the bar upright and secure against the wall.

Using Solidworks, I designed a custom bracket that would provide a sturdy and stable mount for the heavy equipment. The key design considerations were to ensure a secure and discreet installation, while also aligning with the “cassette futurism” aesthetic I’ve been cultivating, which draws inspiration from the iconic 1979 film “Alien” – characterized by broad, rounded shapes, chamfers, and simplified forms.

The bracket featured countersunk holes to accommodate drywall screws, allowing for a flush, secure, and visually appealing installation. To bring this solution to life, I 3D printed the bracket using PETG. As a final touch, I added small plastic plugs to cover the screw heads, creating a seamless and cohesive finish.

The entire project, from ideation to execution, was completed in half a day. The resulting storage solution not only saves valuable floor space but also ensures the heavy hexbar is easily accessible, secure, and visually integrated into my living space.
