Modernizing the Art of Incense Burning
I’ve always been intrigued by the idea of elevating the traditional ritual of incense burning. The common perception oscillates between an ancient, wabi-sabi aesthetic or a tacky head shop vibe, with little in between. Determined to bridge this gap, I embarked on a project to design a contemporary, functional incense burner that would seamlessly integrate into modern living spaces.
The core challenge was to rethink the incense burning experience, moving beyond the conventional upright format. I was curious to explore the potential of burning incense upside down, not only for its novel visual appeal but also to facilitate easier ash collection. This approach, however, revealed some interesting insights about the underlying physics and dynamics of incense combustion.
Through an iterative design process involving 13 (and counting) versions, I crafted a sleek, wall-mounted incense burner that addresses both form and function. The final design features a minimalist, geometric silhouette with a hollow interior that conceals all the necessary components - incense storage, a lighter compartment, and a removable ash tray.
One of the key learnings from this project was that burning incense upside down, while visually striking, is not necessarily the most efficient or advantageous approach. The rapid inversion of the incense stick due to the rising heat actually diminishes the aroma release, going against the core purpose of the ritual. This realization prompted me to reconsider the ash tray design, exploring alternative methods to optimize the incense burning experience.
Looking ahead, I envision transitioning the prototype from its current 3D-printed PLA material to a more tactile and fire proof finish - perhaps a gray porcelain with a subtle concrete-like texture. This material upgrade would not only elevate the overall aesthetic but also better complement the refined, minimalist design language.
Through this project, I’ve gained valuable insights into balancing form, function, and the underlying science of combustion. The journey of iterative design and problem-solving has been immensely rewarding, pushing me to think beyond the conventional and create a truly modern take on a timeless ritual.
