Lightening the Spyderco Mannix 2 with Custom Scales
I’ve long been fascinated by the engineering and customization possibilities of everyday carry tools. The Spyderco Mannix 2, with its robust construction and capable design, has long been one of my favorite folding knives. However, the stock G10 and stainless steel build resulted in a relatively heavy overall weight, which prompted me to take on a customization project.
Tackling Two Key Challenges
- Aesthetic Customization: I set out to create a personalized look for my Mannix 2, while maintaining the distinctive scale pattern. This involved experimenting with a variety of materials, colors, and textures to achieve a unique and visually appealing result.
- Weight Reduction: By thoughtfully selecting and layering different scale materials, I aimed to significantly reduce the overall weight of the knife without compromising its sturdy construction. This would make the Mannix 2 more comfortable and practical for everyday carry.
A Layered Approach to Customization
To achieve these goals, I explored the use of various 3D printing filaments to create custom scales. Through a process of trial and error, I developed a layered approach that not only captured the look I was going for but also substantially lightened the knife.
The first step was to carefully reverse-engineer the Mannix 2’s scale pattern, ensuring a perfect fit for the custom materials. I then sourced and shaped the various materials, carefully layering them to create a visually appealing and functionally optimized scale design.
Personalized Aesthetics and Reduced Weight
The resulting custom scales feature a diverse range of materials, including translucent options that reveal glimpses of the internal structure, as well as more solid, opaque designs. The variety of textures and colors adds a touch of personalization, allowing me to tailor the knife’s aesthetics to my own preferences.
Importantly, the careful selection and layering of these custom materials resulted in a significant weight reduction, making the Mannix 2 much more comfortable and practical for everyday carry. This was a deeply satisfying project, combining my love for pocket knives, engineering, and the joy of customization.
