Laser-Cut Felt Snowflake Coasters:

In November 2021 I set out to create a unique set of winter-themed coasters as Christmas gifts. My initial vision involved crafting intricate snowflake designs using layers of felt, with a cutout top layer set against a solid backing. However, I quickly encountered an unexpected challenge: the overwhelming odor of burning felt when using a laser cutter.

Determined to bring my design to life, I delved into troubleshooting the issue. I meticulously adjusted the laser cutter settings, experimenting with various power and speed combinations in an effort to minimize the burning. Despite my best efforts, the unpleasant odor persisted. I realized laser-cutting felt in the quantity I needed for gift-giving was simply not a viable option. In the end I only produced one unit that I use everyday.

While I may have to revisit this project in the future, perhaps with the help of a specialized felt-cutting service. This experience reinforced the importance of carefully considering the materials and techniques involved in a project.
