Crafting the Plant Wall: A Modular, Acoustically-Optimized Solution
As an audio enthusiast, I’ve long sought to enhance the acoustics of my living space, but traditional sound-absorbing solutions like hanging rugs just didn’t align with my aesthetic preferences. At the same time, I’ve wanted to incorporate the calming presence of plants into my environment. That’s when I decided to design a custom, modular plant wall that would not only look great, but also optimize the acoustics of my room.
Identifying the Challenges
The key challenges I faced were threefold:
- Low-Maintenance Requirement: Given the proximity to my stereo setup, I needed a solution that wouldn’t require frequent watering or maintenance, as that would be impractical and disruptive.
- Flexibility and Customization: I wanted to be able to easily rearrange and swap out different plant types to suit my changing preferences and the seasons.
- Acoustic Optimization: I needed to ensure that the plant wall didn’t interfere with the sound quality from my speakers, and ideally, could even improve the acoustics of the space.
Designing the Solution
To address these challenges, I settled on a modular, felt-based plant wall system with magnetic plant holders. Here’s how I brought it to life:
- Felt Backboard: I started by cutting a large panel of industrial-grade F10 felt to cover the wall behind my stereo. This material not only provides a sleek, modern backdrop for the plants, but also acts as an acoustic panel, helping to absorb sound reflections and improve the overall audio quality in the room. The density of the F10 felt was quite impressive for this purpose, making it an ideal choice for my acoustically-optimized setup.
- Customizable Brackets: I designed and 3D-printed a set of adjustable wall brackets that could be easily mounted onto the felt backboard. These brackets allow me to position the plant holders exactly where I want them, ensuring a visually appealing and functional layout.
- Magnetic Plant Holders: To achieve the desired flexibility, I crafted a series of magnetic plant holders that can be freely rearranged on the felt backboard. These holders can accommodate a variety of plant types, from succulents to trailing vines, allowing me to mix and match to my heart’s content.
- Low-Maintenance Design: By using the magnetic plant holders, I can easily remove and water the plants off-site, without disrupting the overall setup. This ensures that my green companions remain healthy and vibrant, without adding any extra maintenance tasks to my daily routine.
The End Result: A Stunning, Functional, and Acoustically-Optimized Plant Wall
The final product is a stunning, modular plant wall that not only enhances the aesthetic of my space but also improves the acoustic performance of my audio setup. The felt backboard absorbs sound reflections, while the customizable layout allows me to experiment with different plant arrangements to find the perfect balance of form and function.

Because of proximity to the stereo and room conditions the plants need to be low maintenance (no watering on site) the design needs to be flexible to accommodate many types of plants, customizable to provide fun interaction and functional for the sound in the space.
To achieve all this I chose a backboard of industrial felt that I could make brackets to mount to the wall. I would then make magnetic plant holders that could be placed wherever I wanted as my mood and season fit.
The felt also acts as an acoustic panel to reduce sound bounce back to improve acoustic quality from the stereo.
